#2 - Hats Off

Day 2

Hats Off

4x4, oil on gessobord, ($45 + $10 shipping)

I started another beach painting and got about 1/2 way through and realized it wan't working so I put it aside and started a new one.  I've been looking at this cute salt and pepper shaker (the hat is the pepper shaker) I had out for the holidays, so I thought what the heck.  I put it in a box, set up a light and had fun.

ART TIP

Cardboard backing for small canvas/art board

When I paint small I have a tendency to pick up the canvas a lot, even holding it while I paint, so I like to have a backboard to keep my fingers out of the paint.  I didn't have another small backboard and couldn't find any more Masonite lying around when it suddenly dawned on me for a 4x4 cardboard would probably work.  I cut the cardboard backboard then hot glued the ledge piece on the bottom.  Leslie Saeta mentioned on an AHA show that when she travels from her workshops with wet paintings she uses a cardboard pizza box and a touch of hot glue to hold the painting in place.  I decided to try a little dot of hot glue instead of tape. Worked great and comes off easily.

  1. What a fun painting! And I like your cardboard idea. I often use foam core. I have it cut in all different sizes just laying around my studio. I will grab a piece to set my painting on, and if I'm painting on paper, I will clip the paper to the board.
